Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using Redsn0w
As we all know by now that Apple released their latest iOS 5.0.1 couple of days back & seems like it’s jailbreakable! I must say, “wow, that was quick”. Now, we just got to know that the latest version of Redsn0w can jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 but unfortunately it’s still tethered. Those who are following the recent developments of Jailbreak community, should know by now what is “Tethered”. However, if you don’t know for some reason let me explain it to you. In a plain sentence, tethered jailbreak means you have to follow the Jailbreaking procedure every time you re-start you phone. So, basically if you are relying on tethered jailbreak for your iOS devices you might want to turn off your device often or keep it charged all the time before the battery dies.
Enough introduction, lets get started. Latest Redsn0w works pretty well to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 devices. However, there are certain important things that you should know before you get rolling.
- This jailbreaking procedure doesn’t work with the dual core processor based iPad 2 & the latest iPhone 4S.
- Any iOS 5.0 based device which is relying on untethered jailbreak should stay away from iOS 5.0.1.
- Gevey SIM user should create custom IPSW file before updating their iOS as updating iOS will change your Baseband.
Now, here is how you can jailbreak iOS 5.0.1. Follow these steps carefully.
Step 1: Download the latest version of iTunes (10.5) from here.
Step 2: While you are downloading iTunes, make sure you are backing up everything from your idevices to your iTunes.
Step 3: Download the iOS 5.0.1 IPSW file from the links based on the device you are using. iPhone 4 GSM, iPhone 4 CDMA, iPhone 3GS, iPad, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G.
Step 4: Download the latest version of Redsn0w for Mac or Windows.
Step 5: From the zip folder, extract the Redsn0w files & run it. Select “Extras->Select IPSW” and point it to iOS 5 ipsw which you can find it from here.
Step 6: Press “Jailbreak” & select Install Cydia. I am assuming your device is in DFU mode by now. Follow the on screen instructions. Once it’s done, you are pretty much done with the jailbreaking part. Now, lets boot(tethered) your device.
Step 7: Launch Redsn0w once again an go to “Extras->Just Boot”. This should boot your device on tethered mode. Remember, you have to follow this part every time you turn off your phone whether its manually or just because of installing apps from cydia.
For Gevey SIM & Ultrasn0w Unlockers:
If you are relying on Gevey SIM or ultrasn0w to unlock your phone, always remember to preserve your baseband before performing any updating or jailbreaking procedures. Updating iOS will change your baseband & definitely you will loose your unlock. Especially, if you are relying on ultrasn0w unlock, you should check out for the latest ultrasn0w supports.
On the other hand Gevey SIM still supports the latest baseband which is 4.10.01 on iPhone 4 GSM model. Make sure your SIM interposer is compatible with the latest iOS version. To preserve your baseband always use CUSTOM ipsw file. To do so, open Redsn0w and click on “Extras” & then “Custom IPSW”, point it to your latest 5.0.1 ipsw file and redsn0w will create a custom ipsw file. Now from the latest iTunes(10.5) update your idevice with the custom ipsw that redsn0w created. You are good to go. Remember, its better to be safe than sorry. Good luck.
