Mozilla will release its own Firefox Mobile Operating System
If you are enjoying your Android mobile OS based smartphone and thinking that you got the latest technology on your hand, then read this post and think again. On a recent blog post, Mozilla Foundation has confirmed that they are also working on an OS, which will be known as Firefox Mobile Operating System. Like always, their new project will also be Open Source.
Interestingly, this mobile operating system will be made entirely on HTML5 focusing on open web standards. All of the device’s capabilities would be developed as an HTML5 application. This project was initially announced back in 2011 under the codename of Boot2Gecko or B2G.
This project has developed quite a lot over the years and now Mozilla is expecting to release an Smartphone through a third party manufacturer. Mozilla didn’t mention any specific date; however they mentioned that it would be released by 2013. The foundation has already released a build of B2G which can be tested on a desktop computer which can be found from here. In case if you want to try it out, a comprehensive instructions can be found from the Wiki page of B2G. This desktop builds can be a great way for web developers to build their application for this upcoming operating system.

Recently, Mozilla has received positive feed backs from potential device manufacturers. TCL Communication Technology and ZTE expressed their willingness to manufacture the first devices which will run on Firefox OS. Mozilla also noted that, a Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm may power their devices.

As billions of users are expected to come online for the first time in the coming years, it is important to deliver a compelling smartphone experience that anyone can use,” said Gary Kovacs, CEO, Mozilla. “The large number of operators and manufacturers now supporting this effort will bring additional resources and diversity to our global offerings.”
