Firefox just announced its developer preview smartphone for its upcoming Firefox Mobile OS. Back in July, we reported on the possible availability of Firefox Mobile OS and now it seems like things are going on pretty smooth track.
If you don’t know already, Firefox OS would use the open web standards HTML5 apps to perform all the tasks that you normally do on your current smartphones. Starting from simply making phone calls to sending text messages, all would be done through HTML5 based apps.
Geeksphone is the company behind this new developer preview smartphone. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 1 Ghz mobile processor. Let’s not mix Snapdragon processors with popular ARM mobile processors but it’s safe to say that they are pretty similar with some exceptions.
This new smartphone would support UMTS 900, 1900 and 2100 network standards along with GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900 standards. A 3.5 inch HVGA multi-touch screen is also there with a 3 MP read camera. This is a 4 GB model smartphone but you can also expect MicroSD slot to extend the capacity of this phone. Support for Wi-Fi N network, GPS, G-Sensor, light and proximity Sensor and MicroUSB is also there.
Like Apple’s iOS, you can expect to get over the air updates. Another important factor is, this is an unlocked version phone which means developers can try out this phone on any network.
