On a recent news release, Sweden based world known Telecommunication equipment manufacturer Ericsson has confirmed that World’s first Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services has been launched in South Korea and in the United States with their direct product and service support.
At the beginning of August 2012, SK Telecom and LG U+ have successfully launched VoLTE services in South Korea. On the other hand MetroPCS, an American cellular operator has also launched the same services within the United States.
Head of Business Unit Networks at Ericsson Johan Wibergh says, “I congratulate all these operators on this great achievement, Telecom grade telephony is going all-IP over commercial mobile broadband LTE networks for the first time. This is a historic moment in the telecom industry… We see increasing operator interest in VoLTE globally, and we expect broader market take-off in 2013.”
Ericsson has helped all of these cellular operators to implement this new technology by supplying their products and services, the company also expects to continue their support and also to help expand and improve their services in future. Ericsson’s end-to-end VoLTE solution portfolio comprises IMS including MTAS (Multimedia Telephony Application Server), Evolved Packet Core (EPC), LTE Radio Access Network, OSS and services. For VoLTE interworking with legacy networks, the portfolio also includes support in GSM/WCDMA RAN, Mobile Softswitch Solution, EPC and the CDMA core portfolio. The Ericsson RCS (Rich Communication Suite) solution provides complement to enhancing communication services.
Using VoLTE, consumers will be able to enjoy regular telecom level HD voice, video calling and other rich communication services from their smartphones. Ericsson believes, introducing this new technology would be a milestone for the Telecommunication world.
