It’s been while now since Solid State Drives (SSD) has hit the consumer electronics market. As the day goes by more and more computer users are being introduced with this new technology and I am confident that they love their SSD drive more than their previous typical hard drives. Even though SSD technology is not as popular as typical hard drives are but its origin dates back to 1950s.
Now, for those who don’t know what’s SSD. It’s a data storage device that uses integrated circuit which is built on semiconductors to read or write data. It might sound bit hard to understand if you are not quite familiar with all these terms, so just simply keep those words on your brain for now and do some Google search later on.
Before we dig deep inside SSD, let’s understand how the typical hard drives works and looks like, it will help us to understand SSD easily. Take a look at the picture given below. On the left hand side you will find the inside view of a typical hard drive, where you see all the mechanical parts of it. The bright colored round shaped disks are called “Platter” and the hand like thing on the top of it is called “Head”. Every time you power on your computer the platter starts moving just like the compact discs (CD) at a certain speed which is defined as RPM or Revolutions per minute. Now days, a typical hard drive platters can move from 3,600 – 15,000 RPM depending on its features. Headers are used to record, read or to erase data on hard disk drive.
Now, take a look at the main circuit board of an SSD (right hand side of the image). Did you notice any difference from the typical hard drive? I assume you did.
Main difference between HDD and SDD is that like typical drive SSD doesn’t have any moving mechanical parts; this is just simply one of the very big reasons why SSD is much better, efficient, reliable and faster than your regular HDD. First of all, since SSDs don’t have any moving parts it consumes less energy compare to the typical hard drives. The read-write header of the hard disk needs to move throughout various regions of the platters to retrieve data but SSD don’t do that, it decreases the data access time and latency significantly. So, your applications, documents will response way faster than HDD. You will see significantly faster boot up time.
Ever since I installed brand new SSD on my computer, I have notice dramatic change in speed, especially boot up time and file access time was really noticeable. It takes less than 5 seconds to open Adobe Photoshop CS4 on my 2.2GHz processor based computer with only 3GB of ram. Now, you can guess what possibly it might take to open up an Word document.
SSD drives are very light weight device and it doesn’t create as much heat as regular hard drive does. Shock absorbing capacity of an SSD is amazingly greater than HDDs. There would be no wonder, if you can retrieve all of your data from an SSD even after dropping your laptop from a 2 storied building. I am pretty sure that regular hard disk will simply fail in such case.
SSDs are absolutely silent. So, if you are pretty much fade-up with all the bad noises that are coming out from your hard drive, you should consider buying an SSD drive.
Regardless all those good and bright part of SSD I should warn you that it has some disadvantages as well. SSDs are expensive and that’s the fact. Per gigabyte cost of SSD over HDD are more than double. For an example, as of today you can find a 160GB of hard disk for your laptop at around $70-$80, where as a 128GB SSD drive would cost you $180-$210 based on brands and various specifications. On the other hand SSD has comparatively low writing speed even though read speed is way faster than hard drives. However, as the time goes by you will see the decrease of performance in SSDs because of Wear Leveling power will go down.
Someone must accept the fact that SSDs are comparatively way faster than regular HDDs. If performance of your computer is your main concern and are willing to spend extra bucks, I am telling you it’s well worth of spending on SSDs than any other component of your computer that you can think of. At least I am more than happy to have an SSD on my PC. It rocks your computing world.
