Less than two weeks before, the British Broadcasting Corporations (BBC) has just launched their app called “BBC Olympics” focusing on the upcoming Olympic Games 2012. This time the Olympic Games will take place in England. So, BBC is one of the top contenders who will broadcast the entire event and ofcourse they don’t want to miss out those Geeky people out there, who would like to enjoy the games from their mobile devices especially when they are on the move. BBC Olympics app is the outcome of their very own effort to reach out millions of smart device users.

BBC Olympics App ScreenshotToday, BBC has release their “BBC Olympics” app for both the iOS and Android platform. On a “Media Centre” release, BBC has confirmed the availability of this app.

These applications are compatible with their native devices and can be accessed via 3G or Wi-Fi internet connection. However, there would be two different version of this app. One is specially made for the UK users and another one is for rest of the World. Since BBC has the live broadcasting rights in UK, so the UK users will be able watch live event of the Olympic. On the other hand participating nations and other countries can still enjoy daily text commentaries, news updates on all the action, top stories from their national teams based on their location, key events and medal moments. Unfortunately there won’t be any live streaming through this App for Non-UK users.

Let’s not forget that the Free App will include banner ads displayed at the bottom of the screen and it seems like BBC is pretty outspoken on this issue as well. A spokesperson from BBC added, “These will support rich media or standard banner ads,”.

Another interesting issue could be the GEO IP targeting approach of BBC’s Olympic home page which will automatically detect your IP (Internet Protocol) address and will display the content based on your Geographic location. So, if you are expecting to visit BBC Olympic home page and enjoy more content, most probably that’s not going to happen either.

“We believe these latest updates to the site along with the creation of a version for mobile users and the bespoke app ensure sporting fans across the globe can enjoy the games whenever and wherever they choose.” James Montgomery, Controller of Digital & Technology for BBC Global News.
