How to Jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Using Redsn0w 0.9.12b1
Recent developments on jailbreaking iOS devices world is really amazing. One after another tool is coming out with their latest weapon to conquer iOS world. World known the Dev team has just released their latest version of Redsn0w 0.9.12b1, yet another popular jailbreaking tool. Less than a week back we showed you how to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 devices using Greenpois0n Absinthe 2.0 tool. Now, its time for Redsn0w to show it’s magic.
Now, if you just simply want to jailbreak your device, it’s best to go with Absinthe. However, if you are one of those people who are relying on software based (Ultrasn0w) carrier unlock services, you definitely want to give it a shot with the Redsn0w. The jailbreaking process is pretty simple but before you get started, we want to point out certain issues that we think is very important.
Latest Redsn0w 0.9.12b1 will help you to jailbreak your iOS devices but it is even more important for iPhone users to preserve their baseband before they jailbreak their devices. Remember, iOS 5.1.1 updates your baseband, so you better create a custom a IPSW (iOS 5.1.1 file) file to preserve your baseband so that you don’t loose your Ultrasn0w carrier unlock feature.
Redsn0w will let you preserve your baseband and also to jailbreake your device depending on what exactly you want to do with it. Before we get started please always remember to backup your device for the sake of your important files and contacts. It’s always better to be safe than sorry later on. Anyway, at this stage I am assuming you are done with backing up your device, so lets get started.
Step 1: Download the latest version of Redsn0w from here.
Step 2: Connect your device with computer and then run the Redsn0w application. The main window would look like the screenshot given below.
Step 3: Click “Jailbreak” button and then select “Cydia” option from next window. Redsn0w will do the rest.
Important Note: If you are relying on Ultrasn0w based carrier unlock feature on your device, you must create a custom IPSW file from “Extras > Custom IPSW” button to preserve your baseband. This process requires you to have original iOS 5.1.1 IPSW file for your device and then using Redsn0w you can create custom IPSW file exclusively made for your device. You will loose your carrier unlock if you don’t update your device with custom iOS 5.1.1 ipsw file. So proceed with caution.
Step 4: Once Redsn0w finishes it’s job, you device will reboot. After a certain period of time your device would load the iOS 5.1.1 and you will see the “Cydia” icon on the desktop of your device.
That’s pretty much it. You should have your device jailbroken and can enjoy all the repositories from Cydia.
